From knapping square corners, making gallets and construction this was an interesting project blending contemporary and historic. A project by a 20-year-old apprentice that will last for years to come.

The brief was to fully re-roof Compton House, a late 18th-century house which was being fully renovated at the time. The resulting roof included new rafters, lead work for dormers, gutters and cast-iron pipe collar, slating the roof and turret and preserving the oak panels as part of the original fabric of the building.

A four-storey residential Victorian building which was converted into flats. The work was to renew the existing rear lead dome, incorporating insulation and replacing timber decking and any other decayed timber, retiling the pitched tiled roof slopes and flat roof adjoining the dome.

The shop and residential unit were being renovated and extended. The original tired and dilapidated flat mineral roof canopy was to be re-roofed with an ornamental lead work design. The new roof was hand bossed with welded corners and sand casted lions’ heads were added for a striking visual effect.

Instructed by Manorwood Construction to roof May Day Barn, May Day Stables and The Cart Shed. Work included hand nailing riven chestnut lath and hand whittling timber pegs to fit the random sized holes of the peg tiles supplied. All tile cuts were by hand with the use of hot lime for the bonnets, ridges and verges.

A character country home dating back to possibly around 1914. Work included replacing peg and nibbed tiles with handmade clay tiles, eco-friendly sheepswool insulation with a specialist stonemason employed to replace the stone copings. This project was voted as the winning project for workmanship at the UK Roof Tiling Awards 2019.
