HARSFOLD BARN, WISBOROUGH GREEN

The brief was to convert a Grade II listed barn into a family home with a modern twist. All the character of the barn was preserved with the use of more contemporary features such as electric switchable glass either side of the entrance doors and specialist resin flooring.

JACK MILL HOUSE,  CLAYTON

The Grade II* listed Jack Mill, one of the Jack and Jill pair, is located on the ridge of the South Downs National Park. Jack Windmill had fallen into disrepair and the architects were commissioned to oversee its restoration and the redevelopment of the adjoining Granary and 1960s Mill House.

SUSSEX SQUARE,  BRIGHTON

A Grade I listed building forming part of the formal architectural set piece of Sussex Square/Lewes Crescent/Arundel Terrace/Chichester Terrace. The property originally comprised six individual flats, with the brief to merge the separate basement flat with the ground floor flat to form a comfortable modern home.

BROOK HOUSE STUDIO,  LEWES

The brief was to provide new and radically different spaces for artists Hamish and Yvonne Black to live and work whilst allowing them to remain on the Sussex farmstead they had occupied since 1979. This involved the conversion, extension and repair of an existing 19th-century barn building.

GLYNDE PLACE,  GLYNDE

Viscount Hampden’s family have owned the Grade I listed Elizabethan Mansion and it’s surrounding estate for generations. Giles Quarme & Associates design has delivered a sensitive transformation to part of the building that now provides a home for 21st Century family living whilst conserving and restoring historic fabric. The second phase focused on renovation of the East façade including extensive repairs to the gallery ceiling.

SMITHLANDS FARM,  CHIDDINGLY

The application sought to convert a redundant agricultural  barn which had been in use as part of the existing farm. Enlisting Parker Dann, the advice provided was that the barn could be considered for conversion to a dwelling under Class MB. The Government has subsequently replaced Class MB  with Class Q.

HIGHLY COMMENDED

DANNY LODGE,  HASSOCKS

A 400sq/m house extension adjoining a 100sq/m Victorian gate lodge in the South Downs National Park. Its traditional ‘Sussex barn’ form is connected to the existing cottage via a linking building, which has taken reference from each of the buildings it adjoins, while the interior is packed with one-of-a-kind joyful spaces.

THE HOUSE AT HILL LANE, BARNHAM

The brief was to create a contemporary family home using eco and sustainable materials resulting in a low carbon footprint building which was largely self-sustaining and inexpensive to run. The new building replaced one half of a semi-detached smallholding cottage and derelict glasshouses on a brownfield site.

WESTGATE,  CHICHESTER

A three-bedroom detached, Grade II listed house situated within the Westgate Conservation Area. The brief was to design a single storey extension linking the main house to the existing garage to provide a new family room, upgraded WC facilities, basic utility facilities and a study/playroom with cloakroom.

CHALFONT, WINCHELSEA BEACH

The property is directly adjacent to Rye Nature Reserve and looks out on to the Grade II listed Mary Stanford Lifeboat building. The new building, made almost entirely from timber, replaced a small two room bungalow with a collection of sheds in various states of disrepair.

MAYFIELD PASSIVHAUS

A newly built 6 bedroom certified PassivHaus dwelling, built on an historic Percy Crane landscape garden. The new house replaces the bungalow formerly built for the estate gardener. The brief was to create a modern, environmentally friendly house that contrasted with, but respected the original landscape and connected the garden with the main living spaces.
