2022 SOUTH DOWNS AWARD: sponsored by South Downs National Park Authority

An opportunity to promote outstanding design in a nationally-designated landscape, which clearly demonstrates a positive contribution to the South Downs National Park. The Winner and Highly Commended projects are selected from the Sussex Heritage Trust Award Winners within the South Downs National Park.

ONE GARDEN BRIGHTON

STANMER PARK, BRIGHTON BN1 9SE

Originally one of the large farms in the area and part of the Glynde Estates, a Grade II* listed building dating from 1740. The brief for the garden restoration was to create a wildflower meadow and orchard to act as a nature corridor on the Downs and help biodiversity; a formal garden was to be established to match and connect the style of the main house with the views; the woodlands and raised beds to be restored and a growing area supported by a rainwater harvesting system.

SOUTHVIEW FARM

Southview Farm is a working dairy and beef farm set within the South Downs National Park. The site comprised of a series of connected redundant farm buildings, collectively known as ‘Bone Barn’ arranged around a courtyard and 17th-century barn. The brief was to convert to a single dwelling along with associated internal and external works to create a space for the family to live and work at the heart of the farm.

WISTON ESTATE WINERY

NORTH FARM, WASHINGTON, WEST SUSSEX RH20 4BB

In 2017 ECE were appointed to redevelop North Farm to create an exemplar SDNP enterprise site. The latest phase expands the wine production and storage facilities alongside the creation of new visitor attractions. This includes a new restaurant within the sensitive restoration of two redundant agricultural barns and a restored courtyard at the heart of the winery. Alongside this, new build elements house facilities including a shop and tasting room.
