ADMIRAL MURRAY/NELSON SCULPTURE BY VINCENT GRAY

THE COUNCIL HOUSE, NORTH STREET, CHICHESTER PO19 1LQ

Admiral Murray was born in Chichester in 1759 and died at this home in North Street in 1819. He served as Captain of the Fleet under Nelson, saw service in the American War of Independence, as well as the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars. The concept of the sculpture was from Richard Plowman, Chairman of the Murray Club, to show the close friendship between Murray and Nelson and was executed by sculptor Vincent Gray.

ARUNDEL BEE PROJECT

POLLINATOR’S GARDEN, MILL ROAD, ARUNDEL BN18 9PA

A community initiative, brought together by Arundel resident Nick Field, Angmering and Norfolk Estates, Arundel Town Council, Arundel Castle and South Downs National Park Authority, to create a garden to attract pollinating bees and insects in the town centre and provide an enjoyable place for visitors to relax. The land chosen was where previously a public toilet block had been demolished. The Head Gardener at Arundel Castle, designed a plan and with his garden team, volunteers and KC Services created the garden, using Norfolk estate timber for a ring of natural wood seating and wooden planters for raised flowerbeds, filled with pollinating plants & herbs, mostly sourced as divisions from Arundel Castle gardens.

Interior

NEW SIXTH FORM CENTRE AND LIBRARY

WORTH SCHOOL PADDOCKHURST ROAD, TURNERS HILL RH10 4SD

A new £6.25m Sixth Form Centre, including library and multipurpose hall, as well as social and study spaces. Externally materials take their cue from the listed Tower Building which the new building faces and internally the building is planned to minimise corridors to provide greater connectivity between teaching spaces. The scheme also incorporated a new landscaped quad at the heart of the school.

RYE HARBOUR DISCOVERY CENTRE

RYE HARBOUR ROAD, RYE HARBOUR, RYE TN31 7FW

The Centre opened to public in May 2021, a project which has taken over 10 years from conception to delivery. Sitting in the 1,110-acre site over 400,000 annual visitors visit the Rye Harbour Nature Reserve. The previous facility, Lime Kiln Cottage, was small, cramped and regularly flooded. The cottage and its gardens provided the footprint for the new Centre designed with references to local materials and the surrounding landscape.

SUSSEX YACHT CLUB

85/89 BRIGHTON ROAD, SHOREHAM-BY-SEA BN42 6RF

With rising sea levels the town of Shoreham-by-Sea is becoming increasing susceptible to flooding and therefore the relocation of the clubhouse was required to facilitate the construction of a new flood defence wall. The new facility has been designed with a contemporary take on traditional forms to complement the historic vernacular of the town. The design builds on the language of yacht architecture and subtly resembles the previous clubhouse.

THE HERMITAGE SHIMMINGS PATH WALL

EAST STREET, PETWORTH GU28 0AB

The Shimmings’ retaining wall, bank and footpath had fallen into disrepair over many years, and in 2017 part of the wall collapsed. The wall is listed of local importance and a photograph of the path from 1890 was used as the vision for the completed works. The renovation and repair of the wall utilised the materials on site and integrated modern technology with traditional craftsmanship.

BOGNOR REGIS BANDSTAND

THE PROMENADE, BOGNOR REGIS

The 1920’s Grade II listed bandstand was originally in Cheltenham and was relocated to Bognor Regis promenade in 1948. Arun District Council’s brief was to carry out appropriate conservation works and to improve accessibility to enable it to be used for a wider range of community events. Skilled traditional craftsmen were employed including an ironwork foundry to repair and reinstate the metal balustrading and a specialist in sheet metal roofing to replace the copper roof covering.
